Suggested Guidelines for Writing to
Death Row Inmates
Please do:
 |
Identify yourself,
religion, parish, etc., and some of your family, later, if desired. |
 |
Describe your work
and activities, including death penalty work. It is okay to mention
the ministry, Diocese of Venice, etc. |
 |
Mention interest,
hobbies, and recreation. |
 |
Offer support by
reassuring he/she is remembered. |
 |
Refer to current
local and national news. |
 |
Use a strictly
personal tone, rather that stiff formality. |
 |
Provide a return
address, for response. |
Please NEVER:
 |
Offer any promises
of any kind. |
 |
Ask about or mention
the crime involved. |
 |
Offer regrets or
sympathy for his/her plight. |
 |
Instruct, preach, or
advise in any way. |
Requesting information
about the inmate's attorney is acceptable. If you wish to contact the
victim's family, the attorney may help, under certain conditions.
Since inmates lose their
right to privacy, all incoming and outgoing mail is censored by the
prison. In addition, certain things are considered "contraband"
and are returned or destroyed, such as news clippings, cut-outs, objects,
etc. Entire papers, magazines, etc., are not. The prison decides
each case. Telephone contact and casual visits are never allowed.
